Top Waiver Pickups for Week 6: Rookie RBs & more

Good morning to everyone with Travis Kelce on their team. What a Monday Night Miracle. Kelce scored more TDs in one night than Jakobi Meyers has in 188 career games.

And imagine staying updated by the reporter in the room in Carolina to learn if Christian McCaffrey will be traded to the Bills (real or fake?). We check with Joe Person, one of hundreds of in the room reporters and experts from The Athletic that make the Morning Huddle possible.

The best part? Access isn't just for us (legendary newsletter writers). For a limited time, you can subscribe to The Athletic for just $1 a month. Yup, The Athletic said "miss me with that inflation talk: One dollar". Check out their offer here.

Today's newsletter covers all the critical Waiver Wire talk you need to win your league. With a laugh.

WAIVERS

It's all about Rookie RBs

Kenneth Walker is the number 1, add at almost all cost, waiver pickup this week. Only rostered in 47.5% of ESPN fantasy leagues, there's a shot he's available. Rashaad Penny suffered a fractured tibia and heā€™ll have tests to determine if surgery is necessary. Penny is likely out for the season.

Go get Walker and win your league. Three expert thoughts:

"Kenneth Walker III handled 88% of the snaps after the departure of Rashaad Penny (ankle). 100% attempts, 58% route participation."

"Imagine Dameon Pierce playing on a badass offense that can score points. His name is Kenneth Walker III. Empty your pockets, y'all."

"I know Iā€™ve been saying Dameon Pierce is fun af. But Kenneth Walker is definitely the better talent imo."

  • Jaylen Warren ran a career-high 29 routes this week, dwarfing lead back Najee Harrisā€™ 17. Warren took the lead on third down reps in Week 4 before adding most of the two-minute drill snaps in Week 5 to his workload. Warren is a candidate for weekly standalone value, and he could possibly steal the starting role outright.

  • James Cook leads Buffaloā€™s RBs with 4.12 yards after contact per carry. Cook usually gets his rushing reps late in games, but in Week 5, he took carries in the second quarter. He also took reps in third/fourth-and-long and the two-minute drill.

  • J.D. McKissic is the Commandersā€™ main passing back and has averaged 9.9 fantasy points.

With James Connor banged up, Eno Benjamin will vault into plug-and-play RB2 territory vs. a Seahawks ā€œdefenseā€ permitting the fifth most running back fantasy points.

RECEIVER: Again, please check if George Pickens or Romeo Doubs are available

They shouldn't be (but pick them up immediately if either are).

Alec Pierce is rostered in just 8.3% of leagues and has 9.1, 12 and 16.1 fantasy points in three straight games. The Colts have surprisingly been a top-10 team in pass attempts over the last three games and Pierce has the best shot at becoming Indianapolisā€™ clear WR2.

  • Josh Reynolds has averaged 16.2 fantasy points over the last three weeks and once again led the Lions in targets and routes run in Week 5.

  • Evan Engram. Look, desperate times call for desperate measures.

  • Taysom Hill is TE eligible yet plays QB, RB, WR and TE. Taysom Hill is also third in tight end fantasy points per game. Add him anywhere he's available.

  • Rondale Moore posted a 21% target share en route to seven receptions for 68 yards in Week 5. According to Pro Football Focus, he ran just three fewer routes than Marquise Brown.

Donā€™t buy the hype on Dyami Brown: he had a huge day, but Brown played just the fourth-most snaps at wide receiver for the Commanders. Per Next Gen Stats, he ranked sixth on Washington in routes run.

PASSER: Geno Smith

It's time. Time to pluck Geno Smith off waivers. Geno is currently a top-ten fantasy quarterback and has 2+ passing touchdowns in four of the five games this season, with only two picks. He has two talented WRs and a terrible defense (shootouts).

The name says it all - three tweets that taught us something. One reason to buy low on Diontae Johnson, Courtland Sutton, Deebo Samuel and Ja'Marr Chase. And Randall Cobb?

QUICK SLANTS

  • Panthers HC Matt Rhule was fired this weekend. Here's the full story. Rhule will still make $834,000 a month for the next 48 months. $40 million to not coach in the NFL... sign me up.

  • We need the NFL to use this camera more often to start off pre-snap (video).

  • Jetsā€™ Quinnen Williams ā€˜Knocked the Sh*tā€™ Out of Tyreek Hill (video).

  • Davante Adams pushes a camera man as he leaves the field (video).

Remember: Matt Rhule was the head coach of an NFL team and is now paid $40 million to NOT do his job. Anything is possible.
