🏈 The Best QBs in Football

We've got some good football ahead. TNF preview, Deep Dives & more.

Good morning. It is a good morning whenever there's football on. Just no more primetime Seahawks games, please.

Thankfully, the NFL revamped the TNF schedule this season - we've got epic matchups all year. Tonight features two of the best young QBs in the league as Patrick Mahomes takes on Justin Herbert.

Also: I may never financially recover from the Bengals loss to the Steelers.

Today we'll look at some deep dives on players you should be monitoring, a review of tonight's matchup and key updates from around the league.

Juju Smith Schuster was dominant in the first half Sunday and is the clear WR1 in a Patrick Mahomes-led offense. David Montgomery averaged 1.5 YPC...

Travis Etienne and James Robinson split snaps 51% to 49%, with Robinson leading the way on the ground 60% to 30%. Etienne played 75% of the long-down and distance and 100% of the two-minute offense. He also saw 100% of the short-yardage work.

DEEP DIVES

The idea is you pick up a player the week before everyone wants to grab them off the waiver wire. This column wins leagues like no other. Last week, the perfect pickups were Jeff Wilson Jr and Curtis Samuel. This week's players, available in almost every league, are worth grabbing:

  • Brandon Bolden (0.6%) - Reunited with former Pats OC Josh McDaniels, Bolden is the Raiders passing down RB. He had a 72.3% usage on third down (11 routes run) and three carries. McDaniels seems to loves Bolden and he could value in PPR leagues.

  • Parris Campbell (1.5%) - Outside Michael Pittman, Colts WRs had a terrible week 1 against the Texans. Campbell was WR2 on the Colts in snap % with 71% (16th in the league) and rookie WR Alex Pierce suffered a concussion, giving Campbell an opportunity to solidify himself as the Colts WR2.

  • Jerick McKinnon (10.7%) - While CEH scored twice, McKinnon tied him in snaps, ran more routes and had more targets. He's great at pass protection, so KC wants him out there. Plus, all this work was done with the starters (while Pacheco handled garbage time).

  • Greg Dortch (1%) - The 24 year old WR led Arizona in targets, receptions and yards in Week 1. Should be a factor as long as Rondale Moore is out. And he toasted Kyle Hamilton (video).

Also, why is no one talking about Matt Breida? The only non-Saquon RB to touch the field for the Giants, Breida has been efficient throughout his career (5 YPC). Given Saquon's injury history, he is worth a stash.

THURSDAY NIGHT LIGHTS

Heavyweight QB Battle in Kansas City

A quick preview of every fantasy-relevant player in the Chiefs & Chargers game. The last 5 times KC and LAC have faced off the total scores have been 62, 54, 59, 52 and 43.

Passing:

  • Patrick Mahomes - QB1 takes on a Chargers D that intercepted Derek Carr 3x last week. Who cares. This game will be a shootout and the Chiefs can't kick FGs (Kicker Harrison Butker was ruled out).

  • Justin Herbert - Herbert has the Chiefs number: he's 2-0 with 583 yards and 7-0 TD-INT ratio. No Keenan Allen, no problem. Herbert needs 371 yards to tie Mahomes for fastest QB to reach 10,000 yards (34 games). Betting on it. Just watch this throw:

Rushing:

  • CEH or Chiefs Committee? - Chiefs RBs combined for 126 yards in Week 1. CEH started and saw 7 touches in the first Q. McKinnon only saw 1. Trust CEH, stash McKinnon & Pacheco.

  • Austin Ekeler - Only 2.6 YPC in Week 1 (but more carries than all other Chargers backs combined) and tied for highest receptions on the team, with 72 total yards.

Receiving:

  • Chargers - This is a get right game for Mike Williams and Austin Ekeler fantasy managers. Gerald Everett should also be considered a top 12 TE and Josh Palmer can be used in a flex spot. Mike Williams averages 20.2 FPG w/out Keenan Allen. Palmer averaged 16.2 FPG.

  • Travis Kelce - Death, taxes, and Travis Kelce TE 1 every single week. Automatic start.

  • JuJu Smith-Schuster - JuJu operated as the clear WR1 for Mahomes. Best QB of his career should lead to massive games. This could be one.

  • Mecole Hardman - Hardman is the deep ball threat for the Chiefs (14.9 ADOT) but had merely 3 catches for 16. We've seen enough. But still, this could be a shootout.

  • Marquez Valdes-Scantling - I'd rather eat soggy bread. But still, this could be a shootout.

QUICK SLANTS

  • Bucs WR's Julio Jones (knee) and Chris Godwin (hamstring) missed practice. No one was ruled out but Julio is likely to play. Godwin’s hamstring injury is “more of a week-to-week thing.”

  • D'Andre Swift missed practice with an ankle injury. The Lions elevated Justin Jackson but Swift was "not concerned at all" about missing Week 2. Phew.

  • George Kittle still hasn't been able to practice despite Kyle Shanahan mentioning he's made "a lot of progress." Trey Lance is praying Kittle plays.

  • Shanahan also said that RBs Jordan Mason and Ty-Davis Prince will compete for the RB2 position and "they'll go with the hot hand." Just start Jeff Wilson.

  • Najee Harris said he feels "good" and expects to play this week against the Pats. Continue to stash Jaylen Warren.

  • Lovie Smith did what my girlfriend says I can't: listen. Lovie said they need to give Dameon Pierce more touches. You lovie to hear it.
