🏈 Cutting Up Rosters

Most underrated TE, trades and signings, and the Ravens add to their RBs.

Good morning. Yesterday was cutdown day, which means there are now 900 more guys that can write “former NFL player” on their bachelor profile.

Good news to start your day: Brian Robinson Jr. was out of the hospital. He even made sure to fulfill his rookie duties of getting snacks for the RB room. Early indication appears the Commanders believe Robinson could be back sooner to than the 4-game mandate with IR.

HYPEBEASTS

Risers: 1 Steelers Backup RB & 1 Former First-Round TE

David Njoku's route participation was higher than 52% just once in his career: He finished that season as TE9. In 2022 preseason, Njoku ran a route on 80% of snaps. "Jacoby Brissett has targeted TEs on 29.4% of his throws since 2017 (3rd-most over this span)." Njoku has "massive upside in the fantasy playoffs when Deshaun Watson returns." - @ScottBarrettDFB

Per @AdamKoffler, in the Steelers’ 3rd and final preseason game, outside of Najee Harris, Jaylen Warren was the only RB that got work with the first-team offense. Per @jagibbs_23, Warren also led all rookies with a preseason avoided tackle rate of 89%.

  • Michael Gallup passed his physical and has been activated off the PUP list.

  • Ronald Jones made the Chiefs initial 53-player roster, according to a source.

“Hayden Hurst is the 2022 version of 2021 Dawson Knox who was the 2021 version of 2020 Robert Tonyan.”

Justin Fields was the highest-graded QB in the preseason (15+ dropbacks). He passed for 8.1 yards per attempt, rushed for 7.6, and didn't have a turnover-worthy play.

Free agent RB Kenyan Drake is expected to sign with the Ravens today. Drake's physical with Baltimore went 'seamless,' per league source. Ominous news for Dobbins.

Texans released veteran running back Marlon Mack, per source. It's officially Dameon Pierce szn.

Fallers:

Jaylen Waddle is now in his third week of dealing with an unspecified injury (believed to be soft-tissue, lower-body).

J.K. Dobbins status for Week 1 is "in doubt" per Ian Rapoport. Especially after they've added Mike Davis and Kenyan Drake...

The answer to Darrel Williams vs. Eno Benjamin as James Connor's backup is probably just “no” (@AdamKoffler).

CUT DAY

@SigmundBloom gave his take on everything you need to know from cutdown day and why it matters for fantasy football. From Denver: "With Dulcich out for at least the first four games, the runway is clear for Albert Okwuegbunam, who is a more attractive late-round tight end now." Full article here.

As for players who were cut, the waiver wire order:

The best thing I've watched in a while: NFL Top 100's segment on #1 Tom Brady. If you haven't seen it yet, enjoy. Wish I could embed it here for you but the NFL hates me.

Also, I enjoyed these and thought you might too.

QUICK SLANTS

  • Calvin Ridley was allegedly targeted by a violent street gang in Atlanta through a home invasion. Ridley's fine, this was just a sentencing for the suspects.

  • Jon Gruden at the Little Rock Touchdown club commenting on the emails that ended his NFL coaching career (video).

  • @Ihartitz lists 11 backup RBs that could get a legit workhorse role if their team's starter misses time.

  • Eagles acquired DB Chauncey Gardner-Johnson from the Saints. Philly is looking strong this season.
