Kyle Pitts, Jaylen Waddle, and why Cam should stop rapping.
Happy Saturday and welcome to another edition of The Morning Huddle - itâs Eddie, and Iâm glad to be here. This is the second last weekend without football. We can make it.
There were some great storylines yesterday - letâs get into it.
QB 1
Sean Payton made it official and announced Jameis Winston as the Saints starting QB yesterday. This wasnât a surprise - Winston was slinging it all over the field against the Jags last week,
This is great news for Alvin Kamara owners, as he averaged 2.5 catches per game in 2020 with mobile QB Taysom Hill under center, compared to 5 per game with Brees. While Jameis may not target Kamara as much as Brees, his passing ability will give Kamara more opportunities for targets - not to mention he wonât vulture TDâs when they get to the goal line (probably the most important part).
Jets on the Rise?
While he may not get talked about as much as rookies like Justin Fields, Trey Lance, or Trevor Lawrence, Robert Saleh thinks Zach Wilson is âlight yearsâ ahead of average rookie QBs.
Wilson has impressed the NFL in two preseason games, going 15-20 with 2 TD passes. While there will definitely be growing pains, Wilson looks like he will be a competent starter with high upside - heâs worth in a roster spot if you need a QB, but someone to keep an eye on. Thereâs a very real chance his strong start continues into the season and Zach Wilson becomes the Justin Herbert of 2021.
Just hope his mom stays off social media:
Also an unsexy pick, Corey Davis got 10 receptions in limited action throughout two preseason games, clearly establishing himself as the WR1 for the Jets. The chemistry between him and Wilson is evident, making him a safe WR3 or potential WR2 if you go RB heavy.
Donât forget, Corey Davis was drafted 5th overall in 2017.
More Rookie News
Atlanta beat writers have confirmed what everyone who has drafted Kyle Pitts was hoping to hear: Pitts will be used all over the formation to find exploitable matchups, especially in the RedZone. This is music to fantasy ownerâs ears - itâs hard not to get excited about the upside Pitts has in being more of a wideout than traditional TE, but still having the TE designation. His ADP of a late fourth round pick (#57 overall) is attractive and I may even be tempted late in the third. Heâs no normal rookie TE.
ESPN has reported that Jaylen Waddle will be an âinstant impact player.â This was also to be expected, although itâs nice to see positive reports of guys you felt good about. With Will Fuller having an injury history longer than my list of regrets, and Devante Parker never being able to show true consistency, Waddle has a chance to be the clear-cut WR1 for the Dolphins. If Tua has actually improved as much as reports say, Miamiâs offense has a chance to be truly explosive.
WTF of the Day
Not Washington Football Team. The What The F*** of the day is a former Patriot QB saying that he believes rap music is hurting Cam Newtonâs game. Seriously. That was a real quote. Forget the numerous off surgeries from the punishment Cam took from playing in the NFL the past decade, rap music is the real reason Cam Newton has regressed. Somehow didnât affect Tom BradyâŠ
Injury Updates
Brandon Aiyuk has a hamstring injury and will miss the final preseason game. All signs show he should be good for week 1.
Cole Beasley and Gabriel Davis have both been reactivated from the Covid list and should be back at practice next week. Two more protocol breaches and they will be in danger of being suspended for real games.
Noah Fant will not play in the final preseason game due to a leg injury but will be good to go Week 1.
Dak Prescott is no longer on a pitch count at practice!! Good news for Dak owners and Cowboys fanâs like myself
Tweet of the Day:
Jadeveon Clowney recently said that Guards are not real athletes. Quinton Nelson would like a word.
Have a great Saturday!
