🏈 Flying with Russell

Ravens v Bucs, Deep Dives, and Russ Wilson works out on the team plane...

Good morning. Tonight, we will witness the Lamar Jackson effect: he makes TNF worth watching. And he faces the Buccaneers, who are missing 4 of their top 6 DBs, but are desperate for a win. Fireworks.

Today's newsletter has our weekly deep dives, preview of Thursday Night's game and updates from around the league

DEEP DIVES

Pickups the week before everyone wants to grab them off the waiver wire. This column wins leagues like no other. Last week, the perfect pickup was Gus Edwards. This week's players, available in almost every league, worth grabbing:

  • JaMycal Hasty (0.8%) - After the Jets traded James Robinson, HC Doug Pederson said Hasty will see more carries. Think of Hasty as the value-mart Mark Ingram to Etienne's Kamara. Hasty will get an opportunity to contribute in this offence.

  • DeAndre Carter (1.8%) - With Mike Williams expected to miss at least a month, Carter's playing time will inevitably rise. In Week 7, with Keenan Allen hobbled and Joshua Palmer (concussion) out, Carter saw 94% snap rate and 93% route participation. There's a chance you're grabbing the Chargers WR1 for free. For a week, at least.

And why is no one talking about Marquise Goodwin? Sure, he hasn't been good since one season during the Obama Administration, but Goodwin scored two TDs, plays with the best QB in history (Geno Smith) and D.K. Metcalf is set to miss multiple weeks. You could do worse than the potential WR2 for the Seahawks.

THURSDAY NIGHT LIGHTS

Lamar's Ravens v Brady's Buccs

Post fantasy draft, Yahoo gave my team an A+ rating, while the Ravens and Bucs were expected to be Super Bowl contenders. All three teams have yet to play their best football, but Ravens and Bucs are first in their divisions. Both need a W tonight.

Passing:

  • Lamar Jackson - This could be a bounce-back week for Jackson, who got the sh*t scared out of him by Ray Lewis (video). The Buccaneers are missing 4/6 starting defensive backs.

  • Tom Brady - The QB12, Brady has struggled to get on the same page with his WRs. Our hope is this game turns into a shootout.

Rushing:

  • Gus Edwards - Listed as questionable, Edwards should suit up but could see a reduced workload on a short week.

  • Kenyan Drake - Saw 11 carries last week, but turned that into 5 yards. He has flex consideration if Edwards doesn't suit up, but sitting him otherwise.

  • Leonard Fournette - After a season low 26 yards, Fournette is still RB6 and is 3rd amongst RB's in targets (39). He has seen double digit touches in every game this season and will need to be relied upon if Bucs offense wants to turn it around. Buy low.

  • Rachaad White - White received two fewer carries (7) than Fournette last week, out-gaining him by 5 yards. White is well suited for come from behind, pass-heavy game script. Which this could be...

Receiving:

  • Rashod Bateman - Again, the Buccs secondary is ravaged and Bateman is finally healthy. Think you have to start him if Mark Andrews misses the game.

  • Mark Andrews - Andrews (knee) is questionable after not practicing all week, but is one of those guys who is too good to ever sit, if he suits up.

  • Isaiah Likely has a 22% targets per route run (TPRR) rate this season playing alongside Andrews. If Andrews sits, Likely could easily see 7+ targets in a favorable matchup.

  • Mike Evans - Even though he dropped a gift of a 75 yard TD pass, Evans still finished with 9 catches for 96 yards in W7. He is WR15 on the season and should have a big game against a beatable Baltimore secondary.

  • Chris Godwin - Getting healthier every week, in Godwin's last two games he has 25 targets and 138 yards. It feels like a breakout game is right around the corner and it could come as soon as tonight.

  • Desean Jackson - Yes, The Desean Jackson, might play. In 2022. Wild.

Falcons HC Arthur Smith refuses to throw the ball (to his talented, top 10 overall receivers Kyle Pitts and Drake London), but you can't blame him. Whenever Marcus Mariota threw the ball over 25 times, the Falcons lost. Week 7 was the first time Mariota threw under 20 times and the Falcons lost.

After Sunday's loss, Smith and the Falcons came under fire nationally having been down by multiple scores, and yet, still running the ball well into the third and fourth quarter. That was all said just to set up this banger:

QUICK SLANTS

  • Tony Pollard is a must start as Ezekiel Elliot missed practice Wednesday with a knee injury and likely sits on Sunday - and might have a torn MCL.

  • Darrell Henderson missed practice Wednesday with an illness but there are no signs he's in danger of missing Week 8. Cam Akers is still away from the team for personal reasons and Kyren Williams is not ready to play either.

  • Deebo Samuel missed practice Wednesday with a hamstring injury. Status should be more clear as the week goes on.

  • Michael Thomas still isn't practicing due to his foot injury but went through the team's walk through which is progress. I guess.

  • Andy Dalton will remain the starter in against the Raiders, with Saints HC Dennis Allen calling it a "offensive decision" based on performance. Dalton is coming off a game throwing 3 INTs, two returned for touchdowns. Gimme some of that optimism, Dennis.

Thanks for joining us this AM, today's your last chance to stash Kyren Williams. Go do it.

Russell Wilson of the Day

Russell Wilson worked out and stretched for four of the eight hours on the flight from Denver to London. Said he was doing high knees in the aisle when the rest of the guys were asleep. The internet got theirs...
