COACHING CHANGES

Harbaugh Goes Hollywood

Jim Harbaugh joins the LA Chargers fresh off a college football championship with the University of Michigan. And he brings with him an old school attitude and an old school OC — Greg Roman.

The two previously worked together during Harbaugh’s stops at Stanford and the 49ers, where all 10 of their offenses put up top-10 rushing numbers. Later — as the OC for Jim’s brother, John, in Baltimore — Roman’s offenses led the league in rush attempts per game in 2019 and 2020. In the two years after, they never fell below 30 rush attempts per game or outside the top six in attempts per game, per Colin McTamany of FantraxHQ.

Justin Herbert doesn’t have the rushing ability of Lamar or Kaepernick (and his foot injury doesn’t help), so that could mean a lot of work for Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins. The Gus Bus is the favorite to lead the backfield, but Dobbins has turned heads in camp and might be the best fantasy value on the team (RB43 ADP).

Meanwhile, veteran Josh Palmer and 2nd round pick Ladd McConkey are likely to see the most work through the air. Sorry Quentin Johnston…

McConkey could see a lot of work in slot, but Palmer has the best rapport with Herbert. And after Mike Williams went down last year, Palmer was top-12 in receiving yards per game and top-25 in yards per route run, per @FantasyPtsData. Draft Josh Palmer.
