🏈 Preseason sleepers shine & struggle in Week 2
Isiah Pacheco struggles, Likely & Pickett ball out while the Bills circle the wagons.
Good morning. The self-proclaimed best newsletter in fantasy football is back after a full slate of preseason games this weekend. Before we get into it, here's Joe Rogan doing an impression of me stealing Rachaad White in my 16 team league last night:
Today's newsletter highlights the biggest takeaways from preseason action and the best fantasy related content on the internet.
The Big Story
Preseason Week 2: It Matters to Me
Gabe Davis // Bleacher Report
Week 2 is the midway point of the NFL preseason and serves as the dress rehearsal for starters to prepare for the regular season (only three weeks away!!). We had a few teams show us what their offense will look like (Bills, KC, Jags) and others show us nothing at all (Bears offensive line).
PFF wrote a great recap outlining Friday's, Saturday's and Sunday's games. CBS outlined the QB takeaways for each rookie passer. We outlined the critical takeaways for you below. Read on.
Hype
Risers: Small Hands, Big Heart
Kenny Pickett // Sporting News
Despite famously small hands, Kenny Pickett has a legitimate chance to win the starting job in Pittsburgh. The Steelers rookie made his case as the Steelers starter, finishing 6/7 for 76 yards and a TD, good for a 151.5 passer rating. Tomlin and his staff have Trubisky listed as QB1, but Pickett sure made things interesting.
After leading all tight ends in receiving yards last week (44), Ravens Rookie TE Isaiah Likely put up an even more impressive performance yesterday, catching 8 for 100 yards and one touchdown in just the half.
Perhaps most encouragingly, Pro Football Focus' Nathan Jahnke charted much of Sunday's production coming in two-TE sets, Likely's most obvious path to playing time.
Likely’s upside makes him worth a late-round draft pick.
Gabe Davis played 100% of Buffalo's offensive snaps with the starters, as did Isaiah McKenzie. McKenzie played every snap in 11 personnel with the starters on the first drive. Jameson Crowder took over in the slot in the second drive, but mid-drive, McKenzie took over for Diggs on the outside.
Devin Singletary took every snap with the Bills starters in the first quarter and only left the game when the starting offensive line did. He's looking like the RB1 in Buffalo (which could be a committee).
The 53rd overall pick from the 2022 draft, Alec Peirce appears to have passed Paris Campbell for second on the Colts depth chart. This would make Pierce an every-down player and steal at his current ADP. And he's coached by Reggie Wayne.
Josh Palmer shouldn’t be going 40-50 wide receivers later than Keenan Allen and Mike Williams

Fallers: Players trending downwards
CEH // Draftkings Nation
The Chiefs' first team offense ran more plays this week, giving us a better idea of how the backfield will be managed. And we didn't love what we saw. It was evident that none of KC's three backs, including Clyde Edwards-Helaire, is likely to play more than 50% of the team's offensive snaps consistently, making it very difficult to trust any on a consistent basis.
"I hate to be that guy... but this appears to be a very BAD run by Isaih Pacheco in the redzone. Mahomes was visibly frustrated. Just watch the clip." (video)
Per PFF: Don’t draft a Cardinals backup RB. Based on the preseason snap counts, if James Conner were to get hurt, it would probably be a heavy rotation. It’s best to avoid this situation.
While the Broncos rested most starters, Albert Okwuegbunam played. He not only played, but was rotating in and out with two other TEs and continued to play into the fourth quarter. Let someone else draft Albert O.
Speaking of KC, Sky Moore "remains fifth on the Chiefs wide receiver depth chart and is closer to sixth than fourth." He's a mid-season buy for me at this point.
Pete Carroll is absurdly rosy anytime he talks to the media about SEA player performance or injuries.
So his comments on Kenneth Walker are concerning. profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2022/08/21/pet…

Overtime
Quick Slants
Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said there was no timetable for the return of RB Ken Walker (hernia). This is very concerning and vaults Rashaad Penny up draft rankings.
DE Kayvon Thibodeaux was injured last night but walked by a repoert without any noticeable limp. He said, “I’m good.”
All of Trey Sermon’s carries and targets from the weekend (video).
Saints coach Dennis Allen said that Michael Thomas sat out practice with "a little bit of a hamstring" injury. We'll update you on this.
Scott Barrett's "My Guys" article dropped this weekend and it's pure gold.
