🏈 Are the Jets legit? & other NFL Draft Takeaways

Should we be surprised the Seahawks drafted another RB?

Good morning. Nothing gets the fantasy football juices flowing like the NFL draft. Some major fantasy takeaways, funny moments, Malik Willis memes, and much more to discuss.

In honor of the NFL Draft, may we never forget the night when Russell Wilson’s ex-wife thought she was set for life:

@NFLMemes

After 14+ years playing fantasy football, I started this newsletter because I'd always wanted an independent source (i.e. not pushing their own content) to help find signal through the noise - the best fantasy football content out there.

Today's newsletter covers:

  • 2022 Draft Winners & Losers

  • Roundup of the WR moves

  • Must-read content on fantasy implications

  • Post-draft deep sleepers

Apparently, OBJ wasn't pooped out from rumors, as he dropped some (still unconfirmed) Deebo news himself

But Deebo wasn't having any of OBJ's sh*t

Winners: 2022 NFL Draft Edition

New York Jets

Joe Douglas

GM Joe Douglas crushed this draft, scoring what many consider three top-10 players on Day 1. The Jets landed cornerback Ahmad "Sauce" Gardner at No. 4 overall and Ohio State wide receiver Garrett Wilson at No. 10. They were seen by many as the top players at their respective positions.

They also took former Iowa State RB Breece Hall in the second (No. 1 back in this class). Name a team with more top-tier young talent?

Mike Vrabel's Titans

A quarterback with Malik Willis’ physical tools is rarely available at the draft discount the Titans received. Huge arm. Big-time athlete. Great kid. Just needs a year - and he'll get one, as the Titans can move on from Ryan Tannehill in 2023 by taking an $18.8 M hit (which will save $17.8 M).

As Thor Nystrom says, it's an incredible steal — there is zero downside here. Three notable stats Thor highlights in his thread:

  • No. 1 all-time PFF big-time throw rate (11.0%)… over 2016 Josh Allen (10.6%).

  • Led FBS in broken tackles forced with 90 — RB Kenneth Walker had 89 on 176 more carries...

  • No. 1 QB in this class w/ 55.6% completions on throws 11-20 yards downfield outside numbers

Jalen Hurts' Fantasy Owners

As Jack Miller wrote: ladies and gentlemen, get on the Hurts train. The Eagles’ starting quarterback finished as the QB6 in fantasy on a per-game basis in his first season as a full-time starter - with a rookie as his WR1.

Per PFF, *0* Eagles pass-catchers were considered open on 19% of Hurts' dropbacks in 2021 (5th-worst). Trading for Brown demonstrates a commitment to an improved passing game and gives Hurts an alpha WR1.

Current Eagles WRs Jalen Reagor and Devonta Smith

Other winners include

Christian Watson // Skyy Moore

  • The University of Georgia: Georgia had five defensive players drafted in the first round - including No. 1 overall pick Travon Walker - the most by a single school in NFL history.

  • Baltimore Ravens: Notre Dame safety Kyle Hamilton may be the best player in the draft, Iowa center Tyler Linderbaum is a legitimate first-round talent and David Ojabo is a first-rounder if he doesn't suffer a torn Achilles.

  • Rashod Bateman: Hollywood Brown to the Cardinals is more about Bateman’s value in Baltimore than a massive change for Brown.

  • Skyy Moore and Christian Watson: The two rookie WRs landed in fantasy goldmines with Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers, respectively - with both looking for a WR1.

  • The Producer who walked on stage and asked Ed Marinaro to stop babbling and announce the Vikings pick (video).

Post-Draft Fallers

Some of our favorite players' 2022 outlook took a major hit after the draft.

Upside RBs

@EvanSilva: From a fantasy perspective, there was no more unfortunate RB than Antonio Gibson this offseason: J.D. McKissic returned to WAS (after agreeing to terms with BUF) and WAS drafted intriguing rookie Brian Robinson Jr. in 3rd round.

The Seahawks used the 41st overall pick on Michigan State running back Kenneth Walker III. Three's company? Rashaad Penny and Chris Carson are now joined by the drafts RB2 in Walker III. Pete Carroll hates fantasy players as much as he hates winning.

Michael Carter was a productive rookie after falling to the fourth round a year ago but slides way down draft boards after the Jets grabbed RB1 Hall. After the Raiders declined Josh Jacobs’ fifth-year option and drafted RB Zamir White in the fourth round, someone should send Jacobs a fruit basket. Bills RBs won't be fun to predict.*

QBs - young and old

Most mock drafts had at least two quarterbacks selected in the first round. Kenny "Hand Size" Pickett went to the Steelers in the first, with the second QB drafted 74 overall when Desmond Ridder went to the Falcons. A dozen picks later, Malik Willis went to the Titans and Matt Corral was picked by the Panthers. Sam Howell fell to the Commanders in the fifth round. No rookie QB is an obvious week 1 starter. And neither is Baker.

Stat: This is the first time since 2000 that there was only one quarterback taken in the first 50 picks.

A frustrated Baker // Brownswire

Some speculated Baker Mayfield could be moved during the NFL draft. The favorite to land Mayfield was the Panthers, but after Carolina grabbed Corral, the Lions & Seahawks remain the most QB-needy teams (but Pete Carroll indicated that the Seahawks have no plans to add any veteran). Ryan Tannehill also lost. See above.

Other post-draft losers:

  • Albert Okwuegbunam Sleeper Season was a fun three weeks: April 29: “Broncos draft pass-catching TE Greg Dulcich, rumors have Russell Wilson insanely excited about the pick.”

  • Rondale Moore SZN is on indefinite hold.

  • Anyone who thought they could mess with Malik Willis. The rookie QB took the memes in stride (but did lose on a big payday, only getting $921k guaranteed).

Justyn Ross, the former Clemson WR who had the highest career yards per route run in the 2022 class (2.99). In 2018, as a 19-year-old true freshman, Ross led Clemson in receiving yards. He didn't start a single game while competing for targets against Tee Higgins, Hunter Renfrow, and Amari Rodgers. He averaged 4.98 YPRR, the best ever season in @PFF_College history.

But why did Ross not get drafted or signed? His sad and unfortunate medical eval, highlighted below by Scott Barrett

"The trade"

First look at AJ Brown in a Eagles uniform // @PardonMyTake

The Eagles made the move of the Draft when they traded a Round 1 and Round 3 pick to the Titans in exchange for superstar wide receiver A.J. Brown. The Eagles also signed the age 24 WR to a four-year, $100 million contract. The Titans turned around and drafted Arkansas WR Treylon Burks, which you can read all about here.

The lesser-known fact is that Ryan Tannehill and Julio Jones (dead money) account for 25 percent of the Titans 2022 cap...

  • Tyreek Hill is a Dolphin. Davante Adams is a Raider.

  • A.J. Brown is an Eagle. Marquise Brown is a Cardinal.

  • Allen Robinson is a Ram. Amari Cooper is a Brown.

  • Robert Woods is a Titan. Robert Woods is a Titan.

  • Antonio Brown is a business mogul?

Post-draft content you don't want to miss:

Experience-Adjusted Production is a metric that highlights how productive a player was at a specific year (or years) in their collegiate career relative to other prospects. In his newest article @TheFFBallers, Marvin Elequin explores the concept of Experience-Adjusted College Production for RBs, WRs, and TEs. If you wanted another reason to love Skyy Moore, this is the article for you.

PFF's fantasy football crew (@Ihartitz, @dwainmcfarland and @PFF_NateJahnke) offers instant analysis for every relevant rookie QB, RB, WR and TE. This tracker is loaded with reactions from Rounds 1-7 and was updated throughout the draft. They explain why Raachad White's 2022 ceiling is a “handcuff with benefits” as opposed to someone expected to give standalone value.
